Technique

  1. Step the right foot to the side and turn the body in the same direction.
  2. Bend the front knee to 90 degrees and drop the back knee to the floor.
  3. Take the left hand to the floor inside the right foot, and reach the right arm straight up.
  4. Gaze toward the top hand.
  5. Hold for a few breaths.
  6. Stand up, rotate the feet and repeat on the other side.

Form tips

  1. Work to keep the hips level as you twist the spine evenly from the hips to the shoulders.
  2. Keep the front knee in line with the ankle and shoulder; avoid letting it splay out to the side.
  3. Toes on the back foot can be curled under or pointed.
  4. If the neck is stiff, look down at the toe instead of the top hand.
