Technique

  1. Stand up and step the feet wider than shoulder width apart.
  2. Turn the right foot out to 90 degrees and the left foot in to around 45 degrees.
  3. Square the hips and shoulders toward the right toes.
  4. Bend at the hips and take the left hand to the outside of the right foot.
  5. Reach the right arm straight up.
  6. Gaze at the top hand and hold for 5 breaths.
  7. Then stand up and rotate the feet.
  8. Take the right hand to the outside of the left foot and take 5 breaths.
  9. Inhale to stand up, and exhale to step the feet together back to the starting position.

Form tips

  1. Work to keep the hips level by keeping the legs engaged and the weight evenly distributed between the feet.
  2. Find an even twist in the spine from the hips to the shoulders.
  3. Use the opposing force of one hand pressing down and the other lifting up to bring the twist into the upper back.
  4. If the neck is stiff, look down toward the front toe instead of up at top hand.
